  • Unearned Runs = Runs that are the fault of the fielders
  • The pitcher is not held accountable for unearned runs!
  • If an error prevents the third out of an inning. . .
  • . . . all subsequent runs in that inning are unearned!
  • Unearned runs are not added into a pitcher's Earned Run Average!
  • Which kind of lets him off the hook, right? Think about it!
  • 2005 AL Playoffs, Sox at bat:

  • Man on first, one out, Uribe hits grounder to 2nd, and ball is muffed!
  • Still only one out! Next batter is retired (should have been 3rd out)
  • Iguchi then belts 3-run homer, and all 3 runs are unearned. . .
  • . . . but shouldn't the pitcher be penalized for the home run?
