Bleacher Bums
(Second Definition)

Popular play written by Joe Mantegna and
The Organic Theater Company in 1977

Channel 11 presented a version of it
with original cast members
Mantegna and Dennis Franz.

Once in a great while they
re-broadcast it. Be on the lookout!
It's a Chicago classic!

  • Scene: Left Field Bleachers, Wrigley Field
  • Action takes place during a game against St. Louis
  • Small cast of characters (less than a dozen). . .
  • . . . cheer Cubs, taunt Cards, and bet on everything
  • The only thing they all have in common is that
  • they are die-hard Cub fans!
  • Cub-fan Mantegna spent much time at Wrigley (what better way can an actor spend his days?)
and was able to combine the 1969 bleacher bums with the colorful gamblers he witnessed
over in his section of the bleachers. He also added

  • a blind man who is listening to the game on his radio
  • a blonde sexpot who is working on her tan
  • the play is entertaining, and funny
  • and somehow it all works!
