  • The total number of times that the batter...
  • ... reaches base by means of a hit or an error,
  • draws a base on balls, is hit by a pitch,
  • is awarded first base on "catcher interference,"                  
  • or makes any kind of out, including a sacrifice
  • Plate appearance is a more inclusive category than at bats

    • If you're in the batter's box and facing the pitcher, you are almost certain to be credited
    with a plate appearance, but there are certain exceptions!

  • If a man is on base with 2 outs, and he gets picked off. . .
  • . . . you ain't gonna be credited with a "plate appearance!"
  • And you certainly won't be credited with an "at bat" either!
