  • The total number of times that the batter...
  • ... gets a base hit or makes an out
  • A base on balls is not counted as a time at bat
  • If the batter is hit by the pitch, there's no at bat
  • And no at bat for a sacrifice bunt or sacrifice fly either!
  • Base hits divided by at bats equals batting average!
  • At the time you are in the batter's box and facing the pitcher, you are said to be "at bat--"
but if you then receive a base on balls you do not get credit for an at bat.

  • It's as if you never batted! How weird is that? It's downright surreal!
  • That's why some people use the term "official at bat" to distinguish . . .
  • . . . a statistical "at bat" from a "plate appearance!"
