Earned Runs = Runs that are the fault of the pitcher
The man on the mound is held accountable for earned runs. . .
. . . and may get saddled with earned runs he doesn't deserve!
If he puts any men on base and is then relieved. . .
. . . he is charged with an earned run. . .
. . . for each of his runners that the reliever allows to score. Ouch!

If a batted ball is mishandled by a fielder and then ruled a hit-- even though you and a zillion other fans think it was an obvious error-- any run that scores as a result is an earned run charged to the
pitcher.
It isn't fair, and it isn't right, but it happens quite a bit.
