a baseballyarn legendary rant
  www.baseballyarn.com
The most famous tirade in Chicago sports history. . . and this is just a tiny portion of it!
Cub record
before the tirade

Year     Manager        Record

1981      Amalfitano    38-65
1982      Lee Elia          73-89
1983      Lee Elia            5-14

"The [bleep] don't even work. That's why they're out at the
[bleep] game. They oughta go out and get a [bleep] job and
find out what it's like to go out and earn a [bleep] living.
Eighty-five percent of the [bleep] world is working. The other
fifteen percent come out here. "

Lee Elia, April 1983
(Cub Manager)

Note-- Elia is referring to the day-game-era Cub fans, who come out
to Wrigley and boo the players. (Come on, Lee-- the team is 5 and 14!)
Cub record
after the tirade

Year     Manager        Record

1983      Lee Elia           49-55
1983      Charlie Fox     17-22
1984      Jim Frey          96-65

This looney diatribe is too long for our limited space, but is available at many other baseball sites.
The Ravings of Frustration

  • Elia goes on and on about the fans!
  • Not only are they disloyal and unfair. . .
  • They're worthless bums who don't have jobs!
  • Overall message: When things go wrong. . .
  • Blame the fans! It's their fault!
  • The players are good! The team is good!
  • Legacy

  • This outburst is how baseball remembers Lee Elia!
  • It takes on greater fame with each passing year!
  • We at baseballyarn.com agree that it is certainly entertaining!
  • But we believe people give it an undeserved significance!
  • It is NOT a pivotal moment in Chicago Cub history. . .
  • And should not be treated as such!
  • Stuff like this happens when good teams under-perform. Elia's '83 team was good-- they added Rick Sutcliffe in '84 and won the division!
Too bad they couldn't have done that for Lee!
