"I would give Ozzie an 'A.'"
Jerry Reinsdorf, August 2007
Note--The White Sox Chairman answers a question from the
media asking what kind of grade he would give Ozzie Guillen for his performance as manager during the 2007 season.
He went on to say that it is harder to manage a team with
players who don't perform than to manage a team (like the
2005 World Champions) who do perform.

Lowlights
Lose 22 of 27 in June . . .
score just 2 runs in 3-game . . .
sweep at Cell by Cubs
Give up 8 home runs in
July loss in Yankee Stadium
Lose 18 of 21 in August skid
Bosox sweep them at Cell . . .
11-3, 10-1, 14-2 and 11-1

If Ozzie gets an A, what kind of grade do the players get? Or the General Manager? Or the other coaches? Or do you just blame everything on bad luck and injuries?
|
Traditional Approaches
What do you do when you have a lousy season?
Fire the manager! (the first thing fans think of!)
Back up the truck and get rid of players! (the 2nd)
Spend a fortune on free agents! (very easy for fans to decide)
Dream up unrealistic trades (fans always have a few in mind)
In the end fans can only wait and see what management does
|
Aftermath
A few weeks after Ozzie's 'A' . . . Sox extend his contract!
The contract he had was good through the end of 2008!
His extension keeps him in the Sox dugout through 2012!
The wisdom of locking him in for 5 more years is not clear to us!
. . . and neither is the urgency of doing it at that particular time!
It may have been done to give a sense of stability to the team!

Oh well-- if he managed them to one championship, he can manage them to another, right?
