Once Upon a Time. . .
Cub fans living across the street from Wrigley Field. . .
. . . watched ballgames from their rooftops-- for free!
It was casual and informal and nobody paid attention!
Then the neighborhood grew more upscale. . .
. . .and going to Cub games became far more popular!
It turned out that fans were willing to pay good money. . .
. . . to watch games from those friendly and familiar rooftops
Guess what? It became a lucrative business!
|
Once Upon a (Later) Time. . .
The owners of the Cubs felt they were being ripped off!
The rooftop owners were improving infrastructure!
. . . installing sturdy and professional-looking bleachers!
. . . offering their fans a wide array of food and drink!
. . . and earning more and more money!
So the team's owners (the Tribune Company) decided
to stop other people from making big bucks off their product
by erecting screens behind the bleachers-- no more free view!
|
|
Both sides prepared for battle!
|
|
It Got Ugly . . .
There were lawyers and lawsuits and legal maneuvers!
There were lobbying efforts and hard-nosed negotiations!
Terms of the 2004 settlement specify that
. . . 17% of rooftop revenue goes to Cubs!
. . . Rooftop views remain unobstructed!
. . . Cubs give on-air plugs to rooftops!
|
A Happy Ending . . .
Cubs pick up some extra cash!
Rooftop owners expand their business!
Cub fans get to enjoy unique out-of-ballpark experience!
Plus they just might get themselves on TV!
People all across America know about the rooftops!
They have become a symbol of (north side) Chicago!
