Annual Baseball Draft
1965-present

  • MLB has been conducting an amateur baseball draft since 1965
  • It is held in summer about the time kids graduate from high school
  • Teams make selections in a sequence determined by where. . .
  • . . . they finished in the previous season (from worst to best)
  • This allows a last-place team to get first crack at the prospects!

  • Players are well-scouted and teams know what they're doing
  • If they select a guy, it means they know he's a good player
  • Their first-round pick is the best available player . . .
  • . . .and has the best chance of success in the major leagues!
  • At least that's how it's supposed to work!
  • FIRST OF THE FIRST
    1977
    White Sox Select
    Harold Baines
as the first pick of the entire draft!

  • Catcher Danny Goodwin was the first pick in the 1971 draft
  • The Sox, by finishing dead last in 1970, got to pick him
  • He was a Peoria high school boy, and he didn't sign with the Sox
  • He went to college instead, and four years later, he signed. . .
  • . . . with the Angels after they made him their first round pick!

  • FIRST OF THE FIRST
    1982
    Cubs Select
    Shawon Dunston
as the first pick of the entire draft!

    Basic Checklist
