The 50 AB
Restriction

1997-present
We have established a minimum of 50 at bats for inclusion on our top 10 lists for
batting average, on base average, sluggging average, and OPS.
  • This is an arbitrary decision.
  • Why 50?
  • It sounds better than 62 or 73 or 87!
  • It's exactly one-half of 100!
  • People are comfortable with it!
  • Plus we use the same 50 AB minimum for our City Series leaders
  • Mark Grudzielanek Part I
  • Should be denied a spot on the list!
  • He only has 43 at bats!
  • But he has a great average (.372) and if he had seven more at bats
without any hits he'd still be in the top ten, with a .320 average!
  • So we're putting him on the list anyway-- between the .319 and .321 hitters!
  • Mark Grudzielanek Part II
  • We'd like to be more hard-nosed about enforcing our minimum.....
  • But batting average is a more emotional stat than the others!
  • Mark G's performance deserves recognition!
  • As we say, the whole thing is purely arbitrary!
  • And we're not even considering him for our top 10 lists in Slugging,
    On Base Average
    and OPS!
